THE
ARTIST
David
Nagel was raised in Louisiana where he began his artistic work by building
drilling rig models as awards for the local oil drilling industry during
the oil boom of he 1970's.
He
migrated slowly from metals to the use of driftwood in his art and finally
to the use of exotic woods.
He
moved to Mississippi in 1983 where he continued his wood artistry part
time, then full time as the quality and recognition of his work grew.

HIS WORK
David
is the sole creator of his sculpted art.
His
work has evolved through years of trial and testing. He uses no book plans
or other artists’ ideas. Because of this, each piece he creates is
unique and easily recognizable as his work.
It
has been an odyssey of over 30 years that has led to the pieces that he
creates today. The journey began with metal sculpting in the 1970's and
culminated with the sculptured wood creations he does today.
Today,
David's work as become "collectible" among a growing, and wide
spread, group of art connoisseurs.
David's
creations begin with an idea that is transferred to paper and then to the
actual wood. He creates the laminated layers of woods, does the joinery,
assembles the basic structure, and does the carving using a large grinder.
The piece is completed using a multi-step finish that requires up to 10
days. He admits that he is not a purist. He uses whatever hand or power
tools are necessary to achieve his envisioned design. From concept to
completion, each piece can take up to 200 hours to complete.
Credit
must also given to his wife, Tricia. She is his staunchest supporter, his
constant helper and his severest critic. Both her help and her input are
invaluable. |
